Real Madrid Sack Manager

Fabio Capello axed 11 days after securing La Liga Title

Only 11 days after securing Real Madrid's 30th La Liga title, manager Fabio Capello has been sacked after failing to win over the club's fans and Spanish media.

Real Madrid today sacked manager Fabio Capello, only 11 days after he led the Spanish giants to the La Liga title. He had been heavily criticised by the club’s fans, and Spanish media, about the tactics used to secure the title.

Beckham exclusion

It was this, along with his treatment of midfielder David Beckham that was responsible for his downfall. Spanish pundits believe Capello paid a price for his handling of Beckham, after the former England captain confirmed he was joining LA Galaxy at the end of the season. Capello publicly declared he would never consider Beckham for the first team again, but was forced into a U-turn, and Beckham went on to play a major part in Real’s march to the title.

Capello makes his mark

Fabio Capello had been brought to the Bernabeu, last summer, on a three year contract from Juventus. This was his second spell at the club, previously leading Real to the La Liga title in 1996/97. He took over an ageing, underperforming side that had not won Spain’s top prize since 2003. Capello immediately stamped his style on the club signing his former midfield generals, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson, from Juventus. These were followed by prolific Dutch striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, from Manchester United, Lyon midfielder, Mahamadou Diarra, and Arsenal’s Jose Antonio Reyes – on a seasons loan.

Second half success

Although Real Madrid had a difficult first half of the season, Beckham’s return to form and 25 goals from van Nistelrooy, turned things around and they clinched their 30th league title on the last day of the season, coming from behind to beat Real Mallorca 3-1; edging out close rivals Barcelona on goal difference. Unfortunately this was not enough to keep Capello in, what is regarded as, the most insecure job in European football.

Real’s illustrious history

During Real Madrid’s illustrious history the fans have always demanded that success is achieved with style; the winning of trophies has not always been enough to keep managers their jobs. Between 1999 and 2003 former player Vicente Del Bosque, won two European cups and two league titles whilst in charge. He was eventually sacked, two days after winning his second Spanish crown, as he was viewed by the Real Madrid board to be too old fashioned to match the club’s “Galactico” image. More recently there has been a succession of hirings and firings at the club and seven coaches have occupied the hot seat in the past four seasons.

Poisoned chalice?

So who will be next to take over the poisoned chalice? Getafe’s German coach, Bernd Schuster is being tipped as the favourite to succeed Capello. But as the rumour mill gets into action don’t be surprised to see Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger, and other top names being touted to take the reins at the world’s biggest club.
